Let's be real - golf is meant to be played outside. You can't beat the smell of a fresh cut fairway, the feeling of sun on your skin as you hole out from 20 yards, or the sight of the cart girl pulling up to your tee box. However, in recent years, the sport has been undergoing a transformation that's bringing it closer to city dwellers and introducing a new level of accessibility, especially in the chaos that is Chicago weather. Innovations like the TGL Golf League are leading this charge, changing the game of golf and introducing people to indoor golf, and we're here for it.

So what is TGL? According to Wikipedia, the TGL is a planned golf league created by TMRW Sports, a venture formed by sports executive Mike McCarley and professional golfers Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, in partnership with the PGA Tour. It will launch in January 2024, with events held on weeknights in conjunction with the PGA Tour schedule.

I tried to figure out what TGL stands for, but after a few minutes of searching I'm just going to assume it means "Tiger's Golf League."

You can check out the format of the gameplay here, but suffice to say the format is pretty cool and its own innovation. You can speculate about the fun matchups of Tiger hand off his drive to Rory's irons game.

The team aspect is obviously lifted from LIV, not sure what that effect will be, but if it ends with a massive indoor golf simulator complex in Chicago, LET'S GO.

So what does this all mean for indoor golf?

We feel like the TGL will bring even more visibility and popularity to the skyrocketing world of indoor golf simulators. It will highlight some of the key benefits of indoor golf.

  1. Time-efficient - without having to move between holes, look for balls, etc.  you can pack a lot more golf into a limited time, and the action will be non-stop.
  2. Social Aspect - just like when you're playing with friends, it will be cool to see the pros hanging out and spending more time next to each other rather than walking apart. My only question is will the pros be enjoying cold IPAs and wings while they are on the sim?
  3. Weather Independent - Indoor golf can be played year round, any time of day. That's great for those of us who live in colder cities, or want to play in off hours. For the TGL, it means they can broadcast games at night when you normally don't have any coverage.

We are excited to see how this new league fairs - and what it means for the indoor golf scene.
